M&E Railbus Number 10

Throughout its decade of hauling passengers on the M&E, Railbus No. 10 averaged eight trips over the line each day.

Although patrons seemed to like the service provided, continued and aggressive competition from automobiles and motor buses eventually put an end to the M&E’s passenger service on April 29, 1928.

In late 1929 the bus body was removed and the unit was converted into a self-propelled track maintenance vehicle. Renumbered “5”, it was fitted with a deck-mounted, hand-operated crane for use in lifting rail and faithfully performed for the M&E in that service until the mid-1950’s, when the motor and transmission finally wore out.

Afterwards, the unit became an unpowered trailer… all that remained of the original bus was the frame and its wheels.
